A
new installation piece from Sharon Strong… Just
a few months ago Sharon Strong had the experience of a lifetime: A last
minute opportunity to attend Burning Man 2007 on the ancient lakebed of
the
Black
Rock
Desert
. Being part of this experimental community of free thinkers, theme
camps, and larger-than-life art installations, challenges the
48,000-plus members to express themselves beyond the constraints of
their day-to-day lives (www.burningman.com).
The
deeply profound experience has inspired Strong’s new installation,
“All Our Relations,” for submission to next year’s Burning Man
event. Informed by Native
American spirituality, a series of single and two-sided masks examine
both the face the world sees and the one we protect within. Creating a
“family-mobile,” Strong alludes to the dynamics that exist around us
all; child within elder, masculine within feminine, youth growing into
maturity. Protecting this group are members of nature’s “family:”
wolf, eagle, lizard, salmon, and praying mantis.
Seen
above are the unfinished youth, eagle, and wolf. Although this complex
piece will take some time to complete, we will be displaying the “in
process” family mobile during the upcoming New Year’s Eve Masquerade
Ball (see below). Please join us
for the official unveiling of the completed prototype for the Burning
Man Submission on March 1st, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. at the
Gallery.
